Bar/FOH Staff

Location: The Playground Theatre, London
Contract: Part-time
Reports to: Duty Manager & General Manager
Hours: Variable, primarily evenings and weekends (in line with performance schedule)
Rate of Pay: £13.85 per hour

Role Overview

The Playground Theatre is looking for creative, confident and dynamic Bar & Front of House Staff to join our friendly, close-knit team. You’ll ensure every visitor enjoys an excellent experience from the moment they arrive to the final curtain call by welcoming audiences, serving drinks, and keeping the theatre running smoothly. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow creatives, network with industry professionals and watch brand-new plays, all while getting paid. Key Responsibilities

Greet and assist audience members with a friendly and professional attitude.
Check and scan tickets, manage seating, and provide accurate information to patrons.
Work closely with the Duty Manager to ensure performances run smoothly and safely.
Watch the audience during shows for any illness, disturbance, or safety concerns.
Maintain a tidy, welcoming foyer and assist patrons with accessibility needs.
Support with audience management before, during, and after performances.

Front of House

Bar & Box Office

Prepare and serve drinks and snacks efficiently and responsibly.
Check customer identification (Challenge 25) and follow alcohol licensing laws.
Process cash and card transactions accurately using our till/box office systems.
Restock, rotate stock, and keep the bar clean and organised.
Engage with customers about current promotions, shows, and upcoming events.
Sell tickets and merchandise, assist with ticket queries, and complete box office tasks.

General

Uphold excellent customer service and maintain a calm, positive attitude under pressure.
Support the Duty Manager with opening and closing procedures.
Follow all Health & Safety, Fire Safety, and Hygiene procedures.
Act as a friendly and proactive ambassador for The Playground Theatre.

Role Specification

Essential Experience

Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Friendly, confident, and approachable with a professional attitude.
Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
Strong team player who can also work independently.
Reliable and punctual.
Willingness to take initiative and assist where needed.

Desirable

An interest in the creative arts
Previous experience working in a theatre, bar, or hospitality environment.
Basic knowledge of theatre operations or events.
Experience with alcohol service.
First Aid or Fire Safety training (training can be provided).

Role Description

This role offers a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on theatre experience, meet fellow creatives, network with industry professionals and watch new plays while getting paid.

As a FoH and Bar team member, you will ensure every visitor enjoys a welcoming, safe and enjoyable experience from arrival to curtain call. Responsibilities include greeting and assisting audience members, checking tickets, managing seating, providing performance information, and supporting audience management. You will maintain a tidy foyer, assist with accessibility needs, and monitor the auditorium for any safety concerns.

In the bar and box office, you will prepare and serve drinks, process transactions, restock and organise stock, sell tickets and merchandise and assist with box office queries. You will follow licensing and health and safety guidelines and help the Duty Manager with opening and closing procedures.

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, hardworking, and passionate about the arts, with excellent people skills, a calm demeanour, and the ability to multitask in a busy environment. Training is provided, offering valuable experience and the chance to be part of London’s vibrant theatre community.
