About Us

The Playground Theatre, situated in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (W10), close to the Grenfell Tower, is a unique creative space that originated from a former bus depot. It was established in 1998 by founder and Artistic Director Peter Tate as a haven for innovative theatre artists across various disciplines. The theatre's primary purpose is to provide a platform for these artists to "play" with their imaginative ideas and search for their unique voice. With its commitment to fostering creativity and providing a stage for innovative projects, The Playground Theatre has become a dynamic force in the theatrical landscape, contributing to the development and production of groundbreaking performances.

"WORTHY ‘OFFIE 2022’ WINNER THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK.

We love this off-West End Theatre in Latimer Road, London W10. Not long ago, it was a bus depot. Then two idealistic, dedicated theatre lovers converted it into a gem of a theatre, where talent gets a chance to shine in a state-of-the art space… truly, we’ve seen some of the best plays ever.
Standards of acting and productions are high, but ticket and bar prices are a fraction of what you’d fork out in the West End.
Go, go, go! I’ll eat my proverbial hat if you don’t love it to bits."

A standout in contemporary theatre
"In under an hour, the play weaves together themes of scientism, the origins of belief and the nature of the soul – pretty impressive, right? With its audacious vision, powerful central performance and rich audiovisual layers, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man is a standout in contemporary theatre."

"A hidden gem of London theatre culture
Can’t believe I haven’t discovered this venue before. The cafe/bar is suitably stylish, and the performance space makes for a perfect fringe theatre. I saw The Dream Of A Ridiculous Man - a play in one act adapted from Dostoevsky’s short story. Part of the Voila! Festival. Peter Tate skillfully carries this one act play - the beautiful music and visuals are a theatrical work of art. I will definitely be going again."
