PETER TATE

Founder and Artistic Director

I started the Playground as a space for artists to 'play'.

Previously I had been at The National Theatre and was hugely drawn to the NT Studio but found it somewhat of a closed door, at least to me. I vowed that if I ever had my own space I would have an open door policy as one can never tell who is in front of you and what unknown possibilities they may possess. So I started by gathering between 50-60 artists every year, across all disciplines, to offer them a safe space in which to create. Part of the idea was to see if cross-pollination could happen between say a dancer and a theatre director, a musician  and a stage designer etc. We had the wonderful Lind Kerr Scott lead many workshops along with the late great Marcello Magni. International directors were invited to The Playground such as Henryk Baranowski, Salius Varnas and Hideki Noda to show different ways of working. It was a very fertile period in the history of The Playground and many projects developed here went on to have a life in theatre. However, many did not, even though I felt the quality was deserving of a further life.

Finally I decided to create the theatre for such development projects to have the chance for public performances in our space.  Since our opening as a Theatre in 2017 we have given life to many such projects.

A multi-award winner actor, Peter has performed leading roles at The National Theatre, The Almeida, The Arts Theatre, The Lyric Hammersmith, the Arcola and many others in London, as well as The Baltic house, St Petersburg, The Pompidou Centre Paris, The Khan Theatre Jerusalem, The Public Theatre in NYC and played Macbeth at the Theatre Slaski, Poland. He has also worked in film, TV and with internationally acclaimed choreographers.

His Odd Man Out short film garnered 3 best actor awards at international festivals, and the stage version has won him various top prizes at international festivals including in St Petersburg, Jerusalem and Wroclaw in Poland. His second film One Man will premier in late 2023

As founder of The Playground Theatre Peter aspires to the same eclecticism, opening the doors to all types of projects, and aiming to guide artists into ever freer experimentation.

NAOMI SORKIN

Creative Producer

Naomi Sorkin was one of America's leading classical and dramatic dancers, and comes from a strong musical background. Naomi joined American Ballet Theatre at 17, and rose quickly through the ranks to become a much loved artist of her day.

She became known for her varied repertoire which ranged from classical, lyrical work to contemporary and dramatic choreography, which made her a favorite of choreographers around the world and a leading guest artist. She became a freelance artist, enabling her to experience more diversified work, guesting with many of the major dance companies (both ballet and contemporary) across the states and culminating in a solo evening with cello and piano. Naomi performed this programme in New York City, London, Munich, and Cardiff, which was highly unusual for a ballet dancer at the time.

She played the leading role in the PBS avant-garde film Swan Lake Minnesota, which was highly critically acclaimed and well ahead of its time. Lynn Seymour's recommendation led Naomi to be a guest artist with the Lindsay Kemp Company where she created the ballerina role in his Nijinsky Il Matto and played Hermia in his Midsummer Night's Dream. She then settled in London. With William Forsythe's Ballet Frankfurt, she took the central speaking role in his full-length masterpiece Artifact in Frankfurt, Stockholm, Tokyo, and Lisbon as well as performing the same role as a guest artist with the Dutch National Ballet.

In London she has played principal roles in two West End shows: Brigadoon and Grand Hotel, and also began to work as an actor.

Theatre works includes:The Creditors at The Gate Theatre, Tempestuos Tango at the Almeida,The dancing Mater at the BAC, Blue Eyes Red at the White Bear, Gone With Petrushka at the ICA, and the role of Nastasya Fillipova in acclaimed Polish director Henryk Baranowski's production of the Idiot at Riverside Studio.

Baranowski also created a special role of the Black Angel for her in his Polish production of Macbeth. She starred as Ida Rubinstein in the short film Madame Ida and in the short film Roman Fever, based on the Edith Wharton short story. of the same name. She played the leading lady in Devil's Choice by Irina Ioanneysan and Natella Boltyanskaya at the Playground Theatre and most recently played Ida Rubinstein in Ida Rubinstein, The Final Act, written and directed for her by Christian Holder, also at The Playground Theatre.
