A tranquil hot summer’s Saturday in 2018 on a bank of the River Thames at Hurley.
Three males of three generations of an English family descend on a special riverbank to celebrate Tony’s 70th birthday with a picnic and some kayaking… but his son, Max, is armed with an ulterior motive… He needs his father’s blessing for a significant change of life which will profoundly affect all three. In the knowledge that his father is unwell, Max is nervous about finding the right moment. All his 18 year old son Dominic wants to do is to get out on the water.
Relaxing nearby on the same stretch of riverbank are Sameh and Johara, mother and spirited 18 year old daughter of South Asian descent, who have their own issues to resolve.
The proximity of the two families leads, with fascinating inevitability, to a clash of both cultures and generations as they try, through one shared language - and much attempted humour - to enjoy the day.
